Updated service - Programme list hard to read
Considering the glowing pre-publicity for the recent Sky TV software update, the results (for me at least) have been less than outstanding. “Exciting things are coming your way”…, “loads of great features”…, “get the most out of our new Sky”… suggested that the new software would be truly new and improved. My main issue with the new look is that it is pretty much impossible for me to read the on-screen programme listings without standing almost right in front of my TV. The fine, small black fonts on a light white background are unreadable from about a metre or more away from the screen. The individual programme descriptions above the listings which are white font on black are much clearer.
I have complained twice, first by phone (after waiting 15-20 minutes for someone to answer). The person I spoke to said that difficulties reading the listings was the most common complaint. In a reply to my email complaint about a week later it was suggested that I should adjust the brightness/contrast and colour on my TV, or connect my Sky box up to my TV using an HDMI cable. I don’t see why this should be necessary considering that everything else, except Sky’s programme listings, is clear, crisp and legible.
I have asked Sky staff if it was possible for me to change the font style or text and background colours and was told it can’t be done. I also asked if the “new and improved” format had been trialed by any Sky customers before it was released and got no conclusive answer. Since Sky is pretty much a monopoly in New Zealand I conclude they think they can do what they like and their customers be damned.
Since Sky TV is the only service in New Zealand that gives me access to CNN, BBC and a few other networks that I like to watch, I feel that I am beholden to them. At the same time, I find their new on-screen listing format almost unreadable to the extent that their product no longer serves the purpose for which it is intended and as promoted to subscribers.
